Cobolli squeezes past Michelsen to reach semis in Washington

Italian Flavio Cobolli, the No 10 seed, edged out American Alex Michelsen, the No 15 seed, 7-5, 3-6, 7-6 (2) to advance to the last four of the Citi Open at the William H.G. FitzGerald Tennis Center in Washington on Friday evening.
Cobolli, ranked No 48, will play the winner of the match between Canadian wildcard Denis Shapovalov and American Ben Shelton, the second seed, next.
Ahead of his victory, the 22-year-old Italian won against Belgian David Goffin (7-6 (4), 6-3) and edged out Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, the No 8 seed (1-6, 7-6, 7-6 (7)).
Michelsen, ranked No 60, defeated Italian qualifier Mattia Bellucci (6-3, 7-6 (1)) and qualifier Seong-Chan Hong (6-3, 6-3) earlier in the tournament.
