Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov, the No 7 seed, won against Australian qualifier Rinky Hijikata 6-1, 6-0 to move into the last 16 of the Montreal Masters on Thursday.
Dimitrov, who was playing his first match since Wimbledon, will play the winner of the match between Australian Alexei Popyrin and American Ben Shelton, the No 11 seed, next.
In the previous round of the Rogers Cup, Hijikata, ranked No 74, defeated Japanese qualifier Taro Daniel (6-1, 7-5).
