Russian Veronika Kudermetova reached the last 16 of the Australian Open by beating Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia, the No 15 seed, 6-4, 6-2 at Melbourne Park.
Kudermetova, ranked No 75, will face the winner of the match between Ukrainian Elina Svitolina, the No 28 seed, and Italian Jasmine Paolini, the No 4 seed, next.
Ahead of her victory, the Russian won against Australian Olivia Gadecki (6-1, 6-1) and No 22 seed Katie Boulter (7-6 (3), 2-6, 6-2).
Haddad Maia, ranked No 17, defeated Argentinian qualifier Julia Riera (4-6, 7-5, 6-2) and Russian Erika Andreeva (6-2, 6-3) in the previous rounds of the first Grand Slam tournament of the 2025 season.
