Italian Lorenzo Sonego won against American qualifier Learner Tien 6-3, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 to advance to the quarter-finals of the Australian Open at Melbourne Park on Monday.
Sonego, ranked No 55, will play the winner of the match between Frenchman Gael Monfils and American Ben Shelton, the No 21 seed, next.
The Italian defeated Swiss wildcard Stan Wawrinka (6-4, 5-7, 7-5, 7-5), Brazilian qualifier Joao Fonseca (6-7 (6), 6-3, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3) and Hungarian Fabian Marozsan (6-7 (3), 7-6 (6), 6-1, 6-2) ahead of his victory.
Earlier in the tournament, Tien, ranked No 121, won against Argentinian Camilo Ugo Carabelli (4-6, 7-6 (3), 6-3, 5-7, 6-4), Russian Daniil Medvedev, the No 5 seed (6-3, 7-6 (4), 6-7 (8), 1-6, 7-6 (7)) and Frenchman Corentin Moutet (7-6 (10), 6-3, 6-3).
