Casper Ruud clinched the top spot in Group A at at UTS Guadalajara by sweeping Fabio Fognini 3-0 at the Centro Panamericano de Tenis on Saturday night. The “Ice Man” will face the runner-up from Group B — either Flavio Cobolli or David Goffin — in the semi-finals.
Fognini would have had to beat Ruud 3-0 in order to surpass Adrian Mannarino in the Group A standings and earn a place in the semis. So the Italian’s hopes were dashed when he lost the first quarter. “Fogna” still fought back a bit early in the second quarter, but Ruud went on a 13-1 run after briefly trailing 7-4. Fognini mounted little resistance thereafter.
“I feel great,” the Norwegian said, mixing in plenty of Spanish during his post-match interview — to the delight of the crowd. “I love Mexico; I love Guadalajara.”
By virtue of this result, Mannarino is through to the semi-finals and will go up against Group B winner Tomas Machac.
