Romanian Jaqueline Cristian beat Canadian Leylah Fernandez, the No 27 seed, 5-7, 7-6 (5), 6-3 to advance to the third round of the Indian Wells WTA 1000 at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden on Saturday.
Cristian, ranked No 79, will play Italian Jasmine Paolini, the No 6 seed, next.
The Romanian won against Russian Veronika Kudermetova (6-2, 6-3) ahead of her victory.
