American Amanda Anisimova, the No 17 seed, won against Russian Mirra Andreeva, the No 11 seed, 7-6 (5), 2-6, 6-3 to advance to the last 16 of the Miami Open at the Hard Rock Stadium on Sunday.

Heading into the match, Andreeva had won back-to-back WTA 1000s including last week’s Indian Wells title, and was on a 13-match winning streak.

The Russian teen was far from her best, however, and despite scraping to stay in the match was unable to keep her streak alive in a clash that saw over 100 unforced errors committed.

“Mirra is an amazing player,” Anisimova said after the two-hour, 49-minute battle. “I knew it would be really tough. It was an incredible match. I was super excited to play here. It’s my fourth Miami Open but my first time playing on a big stadium.”

“We’ve both been playing great tennis this year. We’re both big hitters. I knew we would have a great match. She’s not someone who’s easy to play. It makes it difficult to be comfortable with my game. I’m just really happy with the way I was fighting and that I was able to try this win.”

Anisimova, ranked No 17, will face Emma Raducanu next.

The American defeated Egyptian Mayar Sherif (6-2, 6-2) ahead of her victory.

In the previous round of the Miami tournament, Andreeva, ranked No 6, beat Veronika Kudermetova (6-0, 6-2).
