Russian Karen Khachanov, the No 24 seed, won against American Reilly Opelka 7-6 (3), 7-6 (4) to move into the third round of the Madrid Masters at the Caja Mágica.
Khachanov, ranked No 25, will play the winner of the match between Brazilian Joao Fonseca and American Tommy Paul, the No 11 seed, next.
In the previous round of the Madrid tournament, Opelka, ranked No 103, defeated Australian lucky loser Rinky Hijikata (7-5, 7-5).
