American Tommy Paul, the No 11 seed, reached the last 16 of the Madrid Masters by defeating Russian Karen Khachanov, the No 24 seed, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 at the Caja Mágica on Tuesday.
Paul, ranked No 12, will play the winner of the match between No 5 seed Jack Draper and Italian Matteo Berrettini, the No 30 seed, next.
In the previous round of the Madrid tournament, the American won against Brazilian Joao Fonseca (7-6 (7), 7-6 (3)).
Khachanov, ranked No 25, beat American Reilly Opelka (7-6 (3), 7-6 (4)) in the previous round of the Madrid tournament.
