Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, the top seed, beat American Coco Gauff, the No 4 seed, 6-3, 7-6 (3) to win the Madrid Open title at the Caja Mágica on Saturday evening.

Sabalenka, ranked No 1, defeated Russian qualifier Anna Blinkova (6-3, 6-4), Belgian Elise Mertens, the No 28 seed (3-6, 6-2, 6-1), American Peyton Stearns (6-2, 6-4), Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk, the No 24 seed (7-6 (4), 7-6 (7)) and Ukrainian Elina Svitolina, the No 17 seed (6-3, 7-5) in the previous rounds of the Madrid tournament.

Earlier in the tournament, Gauff, ranked No 4, defeated Ukrainian Dayana Yastremska (0-6, 6-2, 7-5), Ann Li (6-2, 6-3), Swiss Belinda Bencic (6-4, 6-2), Russian Mirra Andreeva, the No 7 seed (7-5, 6-1) and Pole Iga Swiatek, the second seed (6-1, 6-1).
