Rome Masters: Popyrin through to third round

Australian Alexei Popyrin, the No 24 seed, advanced to the third round of the Rome Masters by beating Spanish qualifier Carlos Taberner 6-1, 7-6 (4) at the Foro Italico on Friday.

Popyrin, ranked No 25, will play the winner of the match between lucky loser Cameron Norrie and Russian Daniil Medvedev, the No 10 seed, next.

Taberner, ranked No 139, edged out American Aleksandar Kovacevic (6-3, 1-6, 7-5) in the previous round of the Italian Open.
