Kostyuk beats Kasatkina in Rome, pair shake hands

Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk beat Australian Daria Kasatkina, the No 14 seed, 6-4, 6-2 to advance to the third round of the Italian Open at the Foro Italico on Friday.

Kostyuk, ranked No 27, will play the winner of the match between Canadian Leylah Fernandez, the No 24 seed, and Croat qualifier Antonia Ruzic next.

The match was notable for a warm handshake between the pair. Kostyuk, like all Ukrainian players, has refused to shake the hands of any Russian player but with Kasatkina having always been vocal in her opposition to the war and having recently changed nationality to Australian, she was happy to shake hands at the net.

The 22-year-old Ukrainian won against Filipino Alexandra Eala (6-0, 6-1) ahead of her victory.
