Italian Open: Shnaider reaches quarter-finals

Russian Diana Shnaider, the No 13 seed, beat Belgian Elise Mertens, the No 25 seed, 6-2, 6-3 to move into the quarter-finals of the Italian Open at the Foro Italico in Roma on Monday.
Shnaider, ranked No 11, will play the winner of the match between Italian Jasmine Paolini, the No 6 seed, and Latvian Jelena Ostapenko, the No 17 seed, next.
Ahead of her victory, the 21-year-old Russian won against American Caroline Dolehide (6-0, 6-0) and Romanian Jaqueline Cristian (6-3, 6-3).
Mertens, ranked No 24, won against Dutchwoman Suzan Lamens (3-6, 6-2, 6-3) and American Jessica Pegula, the No 3 seed (7-5, 6-1) in the previous rounds of the Rome tournament.
