Australian Alexei Popyrin, the No 5 seed, edged out Chilean Nicolas Jarry 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 to advance to the second round of the Geneva Open at Tennis Club de Genève, Parc des Eaux-Vives on Sunday.

Popyrin, ranked No 25, will face the winner of the match between Serb wildcard Dusan Lajovic and Jacob Fearnley next.
