Iga Swiatek dismissed the suggestion that she needs to change the way she is thinking about her game or her ranking – despite a Roland-Garros semi-final defeat at the hands of Aryna Sabalenka that ended her 26-match winning streak on the Paris clay.

Instead, she pointed out to journalists that she had already made that mindset shift after her early loss in Rome to Danielle Collins, adding that she had not arrived in France thinking about ranking points.

“I think I already changed my mindset before this tournament,” she said in her post-match press conference. “Like losing early in Rome gave me some time and perspective, so I wasn’t really thinking about points here on this tournament.

“Obviously looking at the math, I lost many points right now, but I know that it doesn’t really matter. Like, any of us can win these tournaments. We kind of start every tournament from the beginning. So I’m just going to try to do my job and focus on, like, just getting progress and learning new stuff on grass right now.”

Swiatek: I’m happy I have Roland-Garros

She also paid handsome tribute to the tournament and the courts where she has had so much success in recent years.

“I love playing here, so for sure I’m happy that I was fortunate enough to play so many great tournaments here. Even this one, you know, I feel like I played better than weeks before.

“So for sure, I’m just happy that I have this place to come back to every year and just try to push myself.”

Swiatek will lose 1,200 points when the next rankings are released, and looks set to sink two further places, to world No 7.
