Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia reached the last 16 of The HSBC Championships by edging out Petra Kvitova 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 on Monday afternoon.
Petra Kvitova has won just one of her last six matches. Her only victory since returning to competition after an absence of a year and a half came against Irina Camelia Begu on the clay courts of Rome.
It’s the first time in 52 years that women’s tennis is back at The Queen’s Club.
Haddad Maia, ranked No 22, will play No 3 seed Emma Navarro next.
