Eastbourne Open: Fritz into last eight, defeats Fonseca
Taylor Fritz edged out Joao Fonseca 6-3, 6-7 (5), 7-5 on Thursday. He’ll play American Marcos Giron in the next round

American Taylor Fritz, the top seed, reached the quarter-finals of the Eastbourne Open by edging out Brazilian Joao Fonseca 6-3, 6-7 (5), 7-5 at the Devonshire Park Lawn Tennis Club on Thursday.
“I’m really happy. I was really happy with the level of tennis last night, it’s a shame we couldn’t finish the match then,” said Fritz. “Coming out today, it was tough to really judge my grass-court play, there was a lot of scrapping around.”
“I think almost half of my career titles are on grass, which says a lot for how short the grass-court season is. I feel really confident on it, I feel like I can be serving well, taking care of service games when it’s not really windy.”
Fritz, ranked No 5, will play American Marcos Giron next.
In the previous round of the Eastbourne tournament, Fonseca, ranked No 57, defeated Belgian Zizou Bergs (6-7 (8), 6-0, 6-3).
