Wimbledon: Gauff shocked by Yastremska in 75-minute upset

Ukrainian Dayana Yastremska moved into the second round of Wimbledon by beating American Coco Gauff, the second seed, 7-6 (3), 6-1 at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London on Tuesday evening.

The Roland-Garros champion seemed to have partially weathered the storm after breaking back at 5-3 down, saving a set point, before being outplayed in the tiebreak.

In the second, Gauff made just 43 percent of her first serves and won just 31 percent of her second serve points.

With Jessica Pegula also having crashed out of the tournament, this year’s Wimbledon is the first Grand Slam in the Open Era where two of the top-3 seeds have lost in their opening matches.

Yastremska: Playing against Coco is special

“This court brings a lot of nice memories. I played the junior finals on this court so it gave me a lot of emotions,” stated Yastremska after the victory.

“I think it was a great match today, I was really on fire! Playing against Coco is something special, we have played four times now and it is 3-1 to her. She is a great player and person.

“These courts are made for the greatest players and I am very grateful to be on this court. Thank you so much for the support.

“My preparation before the grass season didn’t go very well – I got sick at Roland Garros and I only trained two days on grass. It was pretty unexpected but it has been a great season for me.

I love playing on grass, I feel like this season we are friends. I hope the road will continue, and it is a pleasure to be here.”

Yastremska, ranked No 42, will face Russian qualifier Anastasia Zakharova next.
