Wimbledon: Sonmez becomes first Turkish player to reach Grand Slam singles third round in Open Era
Sonmez will face the winner of the match between Dutchwoman Suzan Lamens and Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova, the No 18 seed, in the next round

Turkey’s Zeynep Sonmez created history on Thursday as she won against Chinese Xinyu Wang 7-5, 7-5 to move into the third round of Wimbledon.
The win made her the 23-year-old the first player from Turkey to advance to the third round of a Grand Slam singles event in the Open Era.
Prior to this week, the Turkish player had never won a Grand Slam main draw match and now she has won two. Sonmez had defeated Romanian Jaqueline Cristian (7-6 (3), 6-3) in the first round.
Sonmez, ranked No 88, will face the winner of the match between Dutchwoman Suzan Lamens and Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova, the No 18 seed, next at the All England Club in London.
Wang, ranked No 32, won against No 15 seed Karolina Muchova (7-5, 6-2) earlier in the week.
