Wimbledon: Sonego beats Nakashima in gruelling five-set battle, returns to the fourth round

Italian Lorenzo Sonego moved into the last 16 of Wimbledon by winning an epic battle against American Brandon Nakashima, the No 29 seed, 6-7 (5), 7-6 (8), 7-6 (2), 3-6, 7-6 (3) on Saturday afternoon.

Sonego, ranked No 47, came out on top after five hours, four minutes – the longest match of the tournament – and will now play American Ben Shelton, the No 10 seed.

The Italian edged out Georgian qualifier Nikoloz Basilashvili (6-1, 6-3, 6-7 (3), 7-6 (4)) and defeated Portuguese qualifier Jaime Faria (6-3, 6-4, 6-2) ahead of his victory.

Earlier in the tournament, Nakashima, ranked No 34, beat Reilly Opelka (7-5, 6-2, 6-7 (6), 6-3) and edged out Chinese Yunchaokete Bu (6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (1), 6-4).
