Canadian Leylah Fernandez, the No 7 seed, defeated Romanian Jaqueline Cristian 6-3, 7-5 to advance to the last 16 of the Abierto GNP Seguros on Tuesday night.
Fernandez, ranked No 26, will play the winner of the match between Slovak Rebecca Sramkova and Mexican wildcard Victoria Rodriguez next.
