Serb Novak Djokovic, the top seed, won the Athens Open title by edging out Italian Lorenzo Musetti, the second seed, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 after a 2h58 battle.
This is Djokovic’s second title this season and 101st in career, eight crowns away from Jimmy Connors.
With this result, Musetti stays at the 9th ranking, which means that he can’t pretend to a direct qualification for the ATP Finals.
Djokovic, ranked No 5, beat German qualifier Yannick Hanfmann (6-3, 6-4), Portuguese Nuno Borges, the No 6 seed (7-6 (1), 6-4) and Chilean Alejandro Tabilo (7-6 (3), 6-1) ahead of his victory.
In the previous rounds of the Belgrade tournament, Musetti, ranked No 9, defeated American Sebastian Korda (6-0, 5-7, 7-5), Frenchman Alexandre Muller, the No 5 seed (6-2, 6-4) and Swiss wildcard Stan Wawrinka (4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4).
