Italy claims historic third straight Davis Cup title

Against Spain, Matteo Berrettini and Flavio Cobolli won both of their singles matches, just as they did in the quarterfinals and semifinals.

It is a tradition that endures. For the third consecutive year, at the end of November, Italy has etched its name into the history books of the Davis Cup. Following triumphs in the two previous years—including a victory over Spain in the 2025 final—the Azzurri were able to celebrate raising the Silver Salad Bowl in front of their home crowd in Bologna this season.

No country had won the competition three years in a row since the United States achieved a run of five consecutive victories between 1968 and 1972. The Italians can be even prouder of this latest feat: they did so without their two highest-ranked players, Jannik Sinner and Lorenzo Musetti.

They relied instead on Matteo Berrettini and Flavio Cobolli, two impeccable lieutenants throughout the week. Both players won all of their singles matches, with Berrettini not dropping a single set. Their dominance was such that it rendered the deciding doubles match unnecessary, saving the pair of Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori from even having to step onto the court. It was an immense joy for all involved.

the best day of my life

“It means a lot this trophy for me. I was a little bit tight,” reacted Cobolli after his hard-fought victory against Jaume Munar (1-6, 7-6, 7-5). “But in the end, I tried to play my game, take energy from the bench, from the crowd.  I tried to stay positive also at the beginning of the second set, but it’s not easy to play these kind of match. I’m really happy because I play my best tennis on the crucial moment. And this is the best day of my life (laughs).”

We started screaming as loud as we could. I think that’s the strength, the weapon that we have” hailed Matteo Berrettini, who set the tone for the day by defeating Pablo Carreno Busta (6-3, 6-4) in the opening rubber. “We are so together. We play together. Doesn’t matter who’s playing. We’re playing in five every time, and six with the captain. It was a team effort even though we played just two singles. That’s why it feels special.”

Filippo Volandri, the Italian team captain, appeared visibly emotional when speaking to reporters: “It’s amazing feeling. Yeah, Lorenzo (Sonego) learn me to say ‘amazing’. ‘Unbelievable’, too. It’s really amazing sensation. Yeah, we won three Davis Cup, but this one is completely different in front of our crowd, in our country. Yeah, from my side, I didn’t cry for the first two, but I cried for this one because it means a lot for me. I have to only say thanks to these guys. They amazing, the effort. This unbelievable trophy. I’m so proud. We all have to be proud of these guys.”

Italy will attempt to make it four in a row next year, as they have already qualified for the Final 8, which will once again be held in Bologna.
