Chinese wildcard Juncheng Shang defeated Italian Lorenzo Sonego, the No 5 seed, 6-3, 6-4 to advance to the quarter-finals of the Bank of China Hong Kong Tennis Open on Thursday night.
Shang, now ranked No 406 but using his protected ranking, will face the winner of the match between Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp and Kazakh Alexander Bublik, the second seed, next.
The 20-year-old Chinese won against Argentinian Francisco Comesana (6-4, 6-4) ahead of his victory.
