Colombian Camila Osorio, the tournament’s No. 5 seed, advanced to the semifinals of the inaugural Philippine Women’s Open with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over local star and second seed Alexandra “Alex” Eala on Thursday night. The match, held before a capacity crowd at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center in Manila, ended Eala’s hopes of winning her first professional title on home soil.

Osorio, currently ranked No. 84 in the world, utilized her experience to overcome the No. 49-ranked Eala in a contest that lasted over an hour and a half. Despite trailing by a set, Eala showed resilience in the second frame, taking a 3-2 lead and later breaking Osorio to tie the set at 4-4. However, a critical double fault by the Filipina at 4-4 handed Osorio a break point, which she converted before serving out the match.

The road to the semifinals for Osorio included hard-fought victories over Japanese opponents. She opened her campaign by defeating qualifier Sakura Hosogi (6-4, 6-3) and then outlasted Mai Hontama in a three-set battle (6-4, 4-6, 6-2). Eala’s exit followed dominant earlier rounds where she defeated Alina Charaeva (6-1, 6-2) and Himeno Sakatsume (6-4, 6-0).

Osorio now prepares for a semifinal clash against Argentinian Solana Sierra, the No. 3 seed. Sierra, ranked No. 63, earned her place in the final four by defeating Thailand’s Lanlana Tararudee 6-3, 6-4. The Philippine Women’s Open, a WTA 125 event, features a total prize purse of $115,000 and marks the first time a WTA-sanctioned tournament has been hosted in the Philippines. For her quarterfinal run, Eala earned $3,450 and 27 WTA ranking points.
