In the swirling winds above the Mediterranean, where clay-court certainties often unravel, Jannik Sinner found something unexpected – not just a title, but a new version of himself.

“Yeah, amazing week”, he said after winning de Monte-Carlo Masters. “Some great, great matches from my side. So very, very happy. I tried to increase my level match after match, which I have done, so I’m very happy about that. Winning my first big title on this surface means also a lot to me.”

The achievement, however, did not come without reflection. Asked whether he had exceeded his own expectations, Sinner did not shy away from the honesty that has become his trademark.

“No, no, it’s not easy at all (smiling)” he answered when the reporter suggested that it finally was “maybe even a little bit easier” than expected. “I surprised myself in a very good way. I tried to wake up and to improve every day, trying to get better as a player, trying to understand what is the best game style against every opponent, because I haven’t played the same kind of tennis against everyone. And we changed small, small things for that. Starting from Felix, then Sascha. All different players with different qualities. I tried to put myself out there, for better or worse. Today as well, we tried to do the right things, adapting to the wind.

That adaptability proved decisive across a week that demanded constant recalibration.

“it would be strange to tell you that I’m not surprised”, Sinner continued. The Italian refused to rate his level of surprise from 1 to 10. “I guess I still need a little bit of time to realize what happened (smiling).”

Solving Alcaraz on clay

The final against Carlos Alcaraz offered both a test and a glimpse of a budding rivalry shifting onto slower terrain. In difficult conditions, Sinner’s clarity in key moments made the difference.

“It was a very strange match, because it was very windy. The conditions were not warm. The ball is less bouncy. It’s a little bit easier, you know, to play tennis in general.

I was serving well in the important moments in the first set. In the tiebreak, I was very, very accurate. And in the second set, there were up and down a little bit from both. We both were slightly tired. At the end of the tournament, it’s normal to feel this way. And a lot of tension for both of us.”

At the same time, I’ve understood some things that can help me in the matches ahead.

What emerged was not dominance, but control – of moments, of patterns, and crucially, of adaptation.

“It was overall a good match, I feel like, from him and also from my side. There are small things where he is gonna improve, for sure, for the next match against me, and I have to be ready for that.”

Monte-Carlo did not happen in isolation. It followed a relentless stretch across continents, surfaces, and expectations, with barely time to reset.

“Winning Indian Wells and Miami is very hard. Then I had one day off and came here, preparing day by day. I tried to play the right way tactically – we prepared very well. Not just today, but throughout. Overall I’m happy. But I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t surprised, because I am. At the same time, I’ve understood some things that can help me in the matches ahead.”

Some days off, at last

Jannik Sinner is not expected to play before the Madrid Masters 1000, even if he said this week that it was not to be considered as granted. No Barcelona or Munich for him this week.

“Yeah, it’s going to be good having some days off now, away from the courts. It was everything quite hectic from one tournament to the other. And then we see what’s coming next.” If he maintains this level, many more wins will follow.”
