Hungary’s Marton Fucsovics reached the second round at Wimbledon on Monday when France’s Luca Van Assche retired during their first-round match.

Fucsovics, ranked No 76, led 6-3, 4-0 when Van Assche, the world No 82, was unable to continue, with a pain in the back.

The two had never met on tour before Monday.

It was a measure of grass-court familiarity for the 34-year-old Hungarian, who won the Wimbledon boys’ singles title here in 2010 and remains one of five former junior champions in this year’s men’s draw. Van Assche, 22, was making only his second Wimbledon main-draw appearance.

Fucsovics will next play the winner of the match between Czech qualifier Dalibor Svrcina and American Learner Tien, the No 16 seed and a quarter-finalist at this year’s Australian Open. Fucsovics has not faced either man on tour.
