Third seed Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan came through a tight opening set to beat Greece’s Martha Matoula 7-6 (3), 6-1 on Monday afternoon and advance to the last 16 of the Nordea Open, the WTA 125 event on the outdoor clay of Båstad, Sweden. The world No 84 needed a tie-break to settle a competitive first set before running away with the match, dropping just one game after the changeover. She will next face the winner of Germany’s Mona Barthel and Serbia’s Lola Radivojevic.
