Marta Kostyuk turned a losing position into a statement victory, recovering from a set down to beat Mirra Andreeva 4-6, 6-0, 6-2 on Wednesday evening and reach the quarter-finals of the Cincinnati Open.
Next, Kostyuk faces a familiar heavyweight test: the winner of the meeting between No 4 seed Coco Gauff and Czech No 22 seed Marie Bouzkova.
After a scrappy opening set, the Ukrainian was close to flawless, winning 12 of the last 14 games with a dazzling blend of movement, power and point construction.
The result improves Kostyuk’s head-to-head with Andreeva to 3-1 this season – one of the standout rivalries of 2026 – and gives her sweet revenge for her semi-final defeat to the same opponent at Roland-Garros, where Andreeva went on to lift the trophy.
This time, once the No 10 seed found her range, the reigning French Open champion had no answer, swept aside for the loss of just two games across the final two sets.
Kostyuk claimed her eighth top-10 victory of the year, matching compatriot Elina Svitolina for the most by any player in 2026 – a remarkable marker of how far she has climbed. The world No 11 has now won 26 of her last 29 matches, a run of form that has her firmly in the conversation for a maiden appearance at the WTA Finals.
Her route to the last eight has been anything but easy. Kostyuk came through two three-setters’ worth of resistance from American wildcards, beating Sloane Stephens (7-5, 7-5) and edging Sofia Kenin (4-6, 6-3, 7-5) before out-lasting Andreeva. Each test, though, has only sharpened her.
