Krejcikova saves two match points to edge qualifier Friedsam and reach Singapore last 16

Czech Barbora Krejcikova edged out German qualifier Anna-Lena Friedsam 6-0, 5-7, 7-6 (4) on Tuesday to reach the last 16 of the Singapore Tennis Open presented by BNP Paribas. She won the first set without dropping a game, let the second slip after coming back from 5-2 down, and then saved two match points in the third before pulling away in the tiebreak.

It was Krejcikova’s first Tour-level win since her title in Athens, which she followed with a semifinal run in Prague.

Krejcikova, ranked No. 44, took the opening set 6-0 even though she landed only 47 percent of her first serves. That fragile serve stayed with her. In the second set she trailed 5-2 and fought back to 5-5. She then lost the last two games, and the set ended on a double fault.

The third set brought the same pattern. Krejcikova trailed 5-3 and faced two match points. She saved each one with a forehand winner and then broke back. Serving for the match at 6-5, she could not close it out.

The tiebreak stayed level until 4-3, when Krejcikova pulled away. A forehand error from Friedsam ended the match. Krejcikova finished with 54 percent of first serves in.

The Czech had also won their only previous meeting, in the round of 16 at the WTA 125 event in Parma this year, 6-2, 6-7 (2), 6-2. The win improves her 2026 record against players ranked outside the Top 100 to 10-0.

Friedsam, ranked No. 266, was playing her first Tour-level main draw since 2025. She is still looking for her first Tour-level win since 2023.
