Race to Turin, daily: De Minaur takes ninth place by one point, and the Vienna title would make it a 171-point lead

His 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (4) win over Alexander Zverev lifted the Australian to 3,210 points, just above Rafael Jodar, with Jannik Sinner out of the running. Carlos Alcaraz, who leads him 6-0 head-to-head, stands between him and the Vienna title.

One point. That is what separates Alex de Minaur from Rafael Jodar on Sunday morning, and it is enough to put the Australian inside the qualifying places for the Nitto ATP Finals in Turin (Nov. 15-22). By reaching the Vienna final on Saturday, de Minaur climbed to 3,210 points in the PIF ATP Live Race to Turin, one more than Jodar, and took the ninth place, the last one in with Jannik Sinner out for the rest of the season.

Sunday can make that move much bigger. If de Minaur beats Carlos Alcaraz in the final, he will climb to 3,380 points, 171 clear of Jodar. If he loses, he stays on 3,210, still a point ahead.

PIF ATP Live Race to Turin, points since Jan. 1, before Sunday’s Vienna final. “Next”: seeding and first-round opponent at the Rolex Paris Masters, where the seeds have a first-round bye. Sinner is out for the season, so ninth place is the last place in.

The win that changed the race

De Minaur got there by beating Alexander Zverev, who will become world No. 1 on Monday, 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (4) in the semifinals, his first win over the German outside team events after eight defeats. The Australian is now 10-0 indoors this season and has 21 wins at ATP 500 level in 2026, the most on tour, making him only the fourth man since the series began in 2009 to reach that number in a season.

Either way, de Minaur stays ninth after this week: the title would leave him below Frances Tiafoe’s 3,430.

Alcaraz, already qualified, leads their head-to-head 6-0 and is unbeaten at ATP 500 level this season. The Spaniard reached the final by beating Daniil Medvedev 6-4, 7-6 (2).

Four places taken, four still open

Zverev, Alcaraz, Ben Shelton and Medvedev have qualified. The four other places are held this morning by Flavio Cobolli (3,690), Arthur Fils (3,535), Frances Tiafoe (3,430) and de Minaur (3,210), with Jodar one point behind. No one else is still playing this week.

The race may be more open than the standings suggest. Cobolli and Fils, sixth and seventh, both retired last week: Cobolli in tears in the Vienna round of 16 against Matteo Berrettini, while trailing 5-2 in the first set, and Fils with an injury in his Basel quarter-final against Taylor Fritz. Both have said they expect to play the Rolex Paris Masters, where they have a first-round bye. Fils is due to speak to the press in Paris at 2 p.m. on Sunday.

Taylor Fritz’s week ended in the Basel semifinals, where he lost to Valentin Vacherot 7-6 (5), 6-3. He stays on 2,895 points.

Jodar’s consolation

Jodar loses ninth place in the Race, but Saturday also brought him a milestone: the 20-year-old Spaniard is now certain to enter the top 10 of the PIF ATP Rankings for the first time.
