Denis Shapovalov retired from his first-round match against Karen Khachanov at the Rolex Paris Masters on Monday night, even though he was leading 4-1 in the third set. The Canadian had lost the first set 4-6 and won the second in a tie-break.
At 3-1, 40-30 in the decider, Shapovalov stopped play holding his right thigh and called the physio for a medical timeout. A tear was feared, but it looked more like cramp. The truth is probably between the two. He resumed six minutes later, limping, and held serve for 4-1, before retiring during the following game after signs from his box.
In the opening match of the night session, Khachanov goes through to the second round, where he will face 13th seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina or French wildcard Moise Kouame, who meet on Tuesday.
