Tien holds off Vallejo in three sets to set up Van Assche clash in Paris

Fifteenth seed Learner Tien of the United States held off Paraguayan lucky loser Adolfo Daniel Vallejo 6-3, 5-7, 7-5 in 2 hours 22 minutes in the first round of the Rolex Paris Masters on Tuesday. He will face Frenchman Luca Van Assche in the second round.

Vallejo, who lost in the final round of qualifying, took the place of Stefanos Tsitsipas, who withdrew with a right shoulder injury on Tuesday. The Paraguayan had beaten Tien 6-4, 6-3 in the second round in Madrid in April.

Tien needs to reach at least the third round this week to avoid dropping out of the top 20 for the first time since his top-20 debut in May, according to the ATP. The 20-year-old reached the second round in Paris last year.
