With an uncertain road ahead, Medvedev resumes practice after surgery

The Russian underwent hernia surgery earlier this month and is next scheduled to play at the French Open in late May

World No 2 Daniil Medvedev has resumed training after undergoing hernia surgery earlier this month. The 25-year-old posted a video of him taking his first steps back on the practice courts.

In the video, the Russian is seen training on a hard court at the Mouratoglou Academy in France.

Medvedev, who took over the world No 1 ranking from Novak Djokovic for a three-week period earlier this year, underwent the hernia surgery in early April following the Miami Open.

As a result of the surgery, he had to withdraw from the early part of the clay court schedule and is not competing at the Madrid Masters which begins this Sunday or the Italian Open in Rome, which begins on May 8.

Medvedev still on the entry list for the French Open but will he play?

Medvedev is still on the entry list for the French Open, which begins on May 22 but it remains to be seen if the Russian will play the clay court Grand Slam without any warm-up events.

The grass court season also looks very uncertain for the world No 2, with the All England Club & the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) announcing that Russian & Belarusian players will not be allowed to compete at Wimbledon or any of the grass court tune-up events in the United Kingdom on account of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

As of now, Russian & Belarusian players are permitted to play in grass court events outside the United Kingdom, even as the ATP & WTA Tours meet this week to discuss possible sanctions against Wimbledon and the U.K. grass events following their decision.
