Lyon Open: De Minaur reaches semi-finals

Alex De Minaur benefitted from the abandonment of Yosuke Watanuki on Thursday and will play Slovak Alex Molcan in the next round

Australian Alex De Minaur, the No 4 seed, advanced to the last four of the Lyon Open when Japanese lucky loser Yosuke Watanuki withdrew on Thursday afternoon at Parc de la Tête d’or.

De Minaur, ranked No 21, led 6-4 when Watanuki, ranked No 263, pulled out.

The Australian will play Slovak Alex Molcan in the semi-finals.

Ahead of his win, Alex De Minaur defeated Frenchman Ugo Humbert (1-6, 6-3, 6-2).

The Japanese won against Spaniard Carlos Taberner (6-3, 6-4), Frenchman qualifier Gregoire Barrere (6-3, 3-6, 6-3), Spaniard Pedro Martinez Portero, the No 8 seed (6-7 [2], 6-4, 6-2) and Soon Woo Kwon (6-3, 6-4) earlier in the tournament.
