Poland’s Iga Swiatek, the recent Roland-Garros champion and currently on a win streak of 35 matches in a row, stated on Friday that she wouldn’t be part of the Berlin WTA 500 tournament next week. The German competition was supposed to be her return to grass-court action.
“Due to a recurrent discomfort I am feeling in my shoulder, unfortunately I need to withdraw from the bett1open in Berlin. I’m sorry I will not be able to play there. I will focus on recovery and rest in order to be ready for Wimbledon,” she wrote on Twitter on Friday.
Swiatek, the women’s world No 1 since Ash Barty’s retirement, is now seeking her first Grand Slam title outside Roland-Garros. Her best performance at Wimbledon was to reach the Round of 16 last year. She won the title in juniors in 2018.
