Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia advanced to the last 16 of the National Bank Open by winning against Canadian Leylah Fernandez, the No 13 seed, 7-6 (4), 6-1 at the Aviva Centre in Toronto on Wednesday evening.
Haddad Maia, ranked No 24, will play Pole Iga Swiatek, the top seed, next. It will be the 26-year-old’s first ever contest against a reigning world No 1 – she is 4-6 lifetime against the top-10.
The Brazilian defeated Italian Martina Trevisan (6-2, 2-6, 6-2) in her first match at Toronto. She entered the event on a three-match losing streak after her 12-match winning streak was snapped at Eastbourne.
In the previous round of the Canadian Open, Fernandez, ranked No 13, beat Australian qualifier Storm Sanders (6-4, 6-7 (2), 6-3).
