American Marcos Giron, the No 3 seed, won against Australian James Duckworth, the No 7 seed, 7-6 (5), 6-3 to advance to the semi-finals of the San Diego Open at the Barnes Tennis Centre on Friday evening.
Giron, ranked No 58, will play the winner of the match between top seed Daniel Evans and Frenchman Constant Lestienne next.
Ahead of his victory, the American defeated Argentinian Tomas Martin Etcheverry (6-4, 6-3).
Duckworth, ranked No 83, beat Alexei Popyrin (7-5, 4-6, 6-1) and American qualifier Mitchell Krueger (6-3, 7-6 (4)).
