Guinard advances as Fognini retires in Gijon, Cerundolo next
Manuel Guinard benefited from the abandonment of Fabio Fognini (4-6, 6-0, 2-0) on Tuesday to reach the second round of the ATP 250 event
French qualifier Manuel Guinard moved into the second round of the Gijon Open when Italian Fabio Fognini retired from their first round match at the Palacio deportes on Tuesday.
Guinard, ranked No 153, led 4-6, 6-0, 2-0 when Fognini, ranked No 59, decided to pull out of the match.
This was the Frenchman’s third main draw win at the ATP Tour level and he meets fourth seed Francisco Cerundolo next for a place in the quarter-finals.
