Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, the No 3 seed, defeated Russian Karen Khachanov, the No 18 seed, 7-6 (2), 6-4, 6-7 (6), 6-3 to advance to the final of the Australian Open at Melbourne Park on Friday night.
Tsitsipas, ranked No 4, will play the winner of the match between Serb Novak Djokovic, the No 4 seed, and American Tommy Paul next.
Ahead of his victory, the Greek won against Frenchman Quentin Halys (6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (6)), Australian wildcard Rinky Hijikata (6-3, 6-0, 6-2), Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor (6-2, 7-6 (5), 6-3), Italian Jannik Sinner, the No 15 seed (6-4, 6-4, 3-6, 4-6, 6-3) and Czech Jiri Lehecka (6-3, 7-6 (2), 6-4).
Khachanov, ranked No 20, won against Spaniard Bernabe Zapata Miralles (7-6 (3), 6-2, 6-0), Australian wildcard Jason Kubler (6-4, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2), American Frances Tiafoe, the No 16 seed (6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (9)), Japanese Yoshihito Nishioka, the No 31 seed (6-0, 6-0, 7-6 (4)) and American Sebastian Korda, the No 29 seed (7-6 (5), 6-3, 3-0 ret.) in the previous rounds.
