Indian Wells: Garcia fights past Fernandez, makes last 16

Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia, the No 5 seed, advanced to the last 16 of Indian Wells by defeating Canadian Leylah Fernandez, the No 30 seed, 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-1 at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden on Monday.

Garcia, ranked No 5, will face Romanian Sorana Cirstea next.

Garcia has now won her last seven matches against Canadian players – and has won both her matches on tour against Fernandez.

In the previous round of the Indian Wells tournament, the Frenchwoman edged out Hungarian lucky loser Dalma Galfi (6-1, 6-7 (4), 6-4).

Fernandez, ranked No 49, won against American wildcard Emma Navarro (6-2, 6-4) in the second round of the Indian Wells tournament.
