Dane Holger Rune, the No 6 seed, beat Russian Daniil Medvedev, the No 3 seed, 6-3, 6-4 to reach the semi-finals of the Monte-Carlo Masters at Monte-Carlo Country Club on Friday afternoon.
Rune, ranked No 9, will play No 7 seed Jannik Sinner next, who defeated Lorenzo Musetti. It’s the first Masters 1000 on clay for the Dane.
“It wasn’t easy for sure, it’s always tough to play Daniil,” Rune said. “It was actually my first time playing against him in a real match, but we’ve practised tonnes of times. I have huge respect for everything he’s done. The last week it was not easy to stop him but I’m happy I managed to do it.”
The 19-year-old Dane beat Austrian wildcard Dominic Thiem (6-2, 6-4) and Italian Matteo Berrettini (W/O) ahead of his victory.
In the previous rounds of the Monte-Carlo tournament, Medvedev, ranked No 5, won against Italian wildcard Lorenzo Sonego (6-3, 6-2) and edged out German Alexander Zverev, the No 13 seed (3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7)).
