Gea stuns Shelton for first Top 10 win and reaches Shanghai last 16 on Masters 1000 debut
Arthur Gea beat Ben Shelton (No. 3) 7-6 (5), 7-6 (3) on Sunday night to reach the Shanghai last 16 on his Masters 1000 debut. It is the first Top 10 win for the 21-year-old Frenchman, and it stops Shelton from qualifying for the ATP Finals, for now.

Frenchman Arthur Gea, playing his first Masters 1000 event, beat American Ben Shelton, the No. 3 seed, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (3) on Sunday night to reach the last 16 of the Rolex Shanghai Masters. In their first meeting, he won both tiebreaks to earn the first Top 10 win of his career.
The defeat cost Shelton an early place at the ATP Finals. The world No. 4, who turned 24 on Friday, would have qualified for Turin for the second straight year with a win. He now has to wait to join Alexander Zverev and Carlos Alcaraz among this year’s qualifiers.
Nothing separated the two men for most of the match. Each broke serve three times in eight attempts – twice each in the first set, once in the second. Gea served for the first at 5-4.
Shelton hit more winners, 29 to 25, and seven aces to Gea’s four. He also made 27 unforced errors, six more than the Frenchman. Gea won 75 percent of his first-serve points to Shelton’s 63 percent, and he took 90 of the 169 points played. He was stronger at the end of both sets, winning seven of the last 10 points of the match.
Arthur Gea’s fast rise
The 21-year-old world No. 56 continues a fast rise. He started the season at No. 241 and has since won his first ATP Tour title in Los Cabos and reached the US Open fourth round as a lucky loser. He is now 12-2 at Tour level since July. Before Sunday, his best wins had come against Top 20 players Jiri Lehecka at the Australian Open and Francisco Cerundolo in Los Cabos.
Gea had beaten fellow Frenchman Ugo Humbert, the No. 30 seed, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 and Portuguese Jaime Faria 6-7 (3), 6-1, 6-2. Shelton had beaten German Daniel Altmaier 6-3, 7-6 (6) on his birthday. He falls to 7-7 at Masters 1000 level this season.
Gea will face the winner of the match between Argentine Francisco Cerundolo, the No. 21 seed, and Czech Jakub Mensik, the No. 13 seed.
