Russian qualifier Aslan Karatsev won against Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp, the No 23 seed, 6-2, 7-5 to reach the third round of the Madrid Masters at the Caja Magica on Saturday.
Karatsev, ranked No 121, will face the winner of the match between Australian Alex De Minaur, the No 16 seed, and Italian qualifier Marco Cecchinato next.
Ahead of his victory, the Russian defeated Serb Laslo Djere (7-6 (5), 7-5).
