Rome Masters: Coric bests Monteiro to reach third round
Borna Coric edged out Thiago Monteiro 4-6, 7-6 (8), 7-6 (5) on Saturday and will play the winner of the match between Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena and No 20 seed Daniel Evans in the next round
Croat Borna Coric, the No 15 seed, advanced to the third round of the Rome Masters by edging out Brazilian Thiago Monteiro 4-6, 7-6 (8), 7-6 (5) at the Foro Italico on Saturday afternoon.
The Croatian came back from a set down, winning the final two sets courtesy of two close tiebreaks. The Cincinnati champion is looking to build on an impressive run the last four of the Madrid Open last week, where he was knocked out by eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz.
Coric, ranked No 16, will play the winner of the match between Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena and No 20 seed Daniel Evans next.
Monteiro, ranked No 98, beat Frenchman Adrian Mannarino (6-1, 6-2) in the previous round of the Italian Open.
