Atlanta Open: Fritz gains revenge for UTS loss to Wu, moves into quarter-finals

Thursday night at the Atlanta Open 2023 saw Taylor Fritz and Yibing Wu meet in a very different context to their most recent match last Sunday.

That encounter was at UTS Los Angeles, where players were allowed to smash racquets, engage with the crowd, taunt each other and even dance during points. It’s safe to say that today there was no dancing, as Fritz and Wu engaged in a tight clash that saw the American come out on top 6-4, 7-6 (5), gaining revenge for the UTS Los Angeles final which he lost to Wu.

While UTS allowed players only one serve, it was back to the normal quota in Atlanta, and it made all the difference. Top seed Fritz crushed 10 aces and no double faults, serving his way out of big trouble at two set points down in the second set.

“Taking a free point with a good serve is massive,” said Fritz after the match. “It helps a lot.”

Wu, on the other hand, double faulted at crucial moments in the match, including during the second set tiebreak which he went on to lose.

Next up, the world No 9 will face the winner of Japanese Kei Nishikori and Chinese qualifier Juncheng Shang in the Atlanta Open quarter-finals.
