Swiss Belinda Bencic, the No 6 seed, defeated American qualifier Lauren Davis 6-1, 6-4 to advance to the quarter-finals of the Mubadala Citi DC Open on Wednesday evening.
Bencic, ranked No 15, will play the winner of the match between qualifier Hailey Baptiste and No 3 seed Coco Gauff next.
In the previous round, the Swiss benefited from the abandonment of Russian Anastasia Potapova (6-5).
