China’s Zhuoxuan Bai reached the quarter-finals of the Golden Gate Open at Stanford by defeating Spaniard Marina Bassols Ribera 6-4, 6-2 on Tuesday evening.
Bai, ranked No 136, will play the winner of the match between Ukrainian Kateryna Baindl, the No 6 seed, and Chinese Yue Yuan next, in what will be her very first WTA Tour-level quarter-final.
Ahead of her victory, the 20-year-old won against American Claire Liu, the No 3 seed (2-6, 7-6 (3), 6-3).
Bassols Ribera, ranked No 137, edged out American Elizabeth Mandlik (6-7 (5), 6-4, 7-6 (4)) in the previous round.
