Chinese qualifier Yafan Wang edged out Japanese Moyuka Uchijima 6-3, 5-7, 7-5 to advance to the final of the Golden Gate Open at Stanford on Saturday night.
Wang, ranked No 158, will face Russian Kamilla Rakhimova, the second seed, next.
Ahead of her victory, the Chinese beat Ukrainian Daria Snigur (1-6, 6-2, 6-1), German Tamara Korpatsch, the top seed (6-1, 7-5) and Japanese qualifier Mai Hontama (6-3, 6-3).
Uchijima, ranked No 191, won against American lucky loser Hailey Baptiste (7-6 (3), 6-2), No 4 seed Nao Hibino (7-5, 2-0 ret.) and Jodie Burrage (6-4, 4-6, 6-4) earlier in the tournament.
