Russian wild card Vera Zvonareva reached the last 8 of the Ningbo Open when Clara Tauson retired from their match with the score at 6-4, 1-0 on Wednesday afternoon.
Vera Zvonareva will play the winner of the match between Tunisian Ons Jabeur, the top seed, and German Tamara Korpatsch next.
In the previous round, the 39-year-old Russian edged out No 7 seed Katie Boulter (6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (3)).
Tauson, ranked No 76, won against Russian Elina Avanesyan (6-4, 6-1) in the previous round.
